Abstract
Teaching tactics refer to the pedagogical purpose of a teacher’s actions. In practice, teaching tactics are a more productive focus than how the purpose is undertaken. During lesson implementation, a range of teaching tactics can be employed to facilitate mathematisation by students when engaged in mathematical modelling in class. Seven conjectured teaching tactics were confirmed as employed by the teacher of the Year 10 classes in focus, and an additional tactic, promoting metacognition about mathematical modelling, was identified. Several tactics were confirmed as influencing progress of struggling students working in groups. Further analysis is required to determine how teaching tactics underpin the enactment management tactics of students in independent task-solving.
