Abstract
This chapter focuses on a curriculum review process within faculties of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training in state Islamic universities (UIN) across Indonesia from 2010 to 2016. To reform these faculties, it is argued, is to reform Islamic education and Islamic culture, thinking and practice in Indonesia nationally. The chapter explains that the main goal of the curriculum review process was to provide strategic guidance for the development of a more stable Islamic education system that can allow students to acquire an attitude to religion that is balanced, open and critical, as opposed to narrow, traditional teacher-centred pedagogy that emphasises rote learning and uncritical acceptance of authority. The chapter provides detailed recommendations for reform and assesses some of the changes already implemented.
