Abstract
In this chapter, the role of mathematical modelling in supporting citizens capacity to understand and evaluate reports related to disruptive phenomena, in the media and other public forums, is outlined and discussed. In pursuing this discussion, reference is made to the use of mathematical modelling in media items to evidence claims about the status of disruptive phenomena and their likely progress. The outputs of modelling are similarly used to evidence changes in public policy which impact on the way citizens live their lives. These roles have implications for the topics that should be explored during instruction and highlights the need for great focus on critical aspects of modelling.
