Abstract
[Extract] The discourse of science and science education has been a significant arena for Jim Martin’s theoretical work on genre and discourse semantics and for the contributions to disciplinary literacy pedagogy made by Jim and his colleagues through their work in educational semiotics (Halliday & Martin, 1993; Martin & Rose, 2012; Martin & Veel, 1998). Within this work one key aspect has been the theorization of explanation genres – and early recognition of the integral role of images in science explanations and their occurrence within complex multimodal macro-genres (Martin, 1994; Martin & Rose, 2008; Rose & Martin, 2012). This chapter explores a theoretical trajectory for advancing a multimodal perspective on the accounts by Martin and his associates of the semiosis of school science explanations (Halliday & Martin, 1993; Martin, 1989; Martin & Rose, 2008, 2012; Martin & Veel, 1998).
