Abstract
Research Background The art of Chinese and Japanese calligraphy speaks of the language of the brush mark as a gesture incorporating rhythm of the mark and the life spirit - Ch'i. Rhythm in painting has been commented on by many western theorists with regard abstract characteristics of painting. This research focuses on the rhythmic application and expressive power of the brushmark as rhythmic notation.
