Abstract
Context makes an immense difference to the relationship among Catholic social movements, thought and teaching. Drawing on the Australian context as a lens through which the reflections are made, my goal is to capture points that are true for most, if not all, contexts.
I begin with an introduction to the Australian context and the Catholic Church’s place within it. Following this, I will enumerate four points that constitute key ‘learnings’ from our work:
1. The Church tends to follow society rather than lead on issues of social justice.
2. There is an ongoing tension between justice and charity.
3. The concept of listening provides a potentially fruitful key to understanding the relationship between ‘official’ Catholic social teaching and Catholic social movements.
4. There is hope for the future.
