Receiving the Vision of Vatican II in Oceania

Abstract
This chapter will explore the reception of Vatican II in the widely diverse geographical, cultural, and ecclesiastical region called Oceania. It will be demonstrated that an understanding of the reception of Vatican II throughout the local churches of Oceania can be conceived as taking place on three levels, based on Alois Grillmeier’s framework of conciliar reception in the early Church: official reception (by the hierarchy); theological reception (by theologians); and spiritual reception (by the baptized faithful). These three levels are important, since the hierarchy, theologians, and lay faithful have distinct but complementary roles in the Church. This chapter will also consider the council’s communio ecclesiology as another useful criterion for evaluating and assessing how deeply the conciliar vision has been received at these three levels.
