Abstract
This chapter examines how Sidonius Apollinaris fashioned his person as an exile following his imprisonment by the Visigothic king Euric ca. 475-477CE. After his release Sidonius circulated epistles which detailed or reflected on his incarceration, and so showed himself prepared to criticise the very king who had exiled him. It concludes by comparing Sidonius’ fashioning of his persona as an exile to the narrative strategies that Athanasius of Alexandria used in his account of his exile experience.
