Abstract
The mother of Jesus figures in the sacred texts of both Christianity and Islam. While the accounts of her differ, these two Abrahamic religions concur in their acknowledgement of Mary/Maryam as a woman of faith. This paper identifies and provides some accessible and relevant background to this woman with the aim of promoting a reflection on the role and significance of the person and symbol of Mary/Maryam and the implications for understanding the place of Jesus in these different religious traditions. Teachers may find this paper particularly useful as background pertinent to inter-faith dialogue and Studies of Religion courses.
