Abstract
In this chapter, we discuss the role of digital resources in supporting the mathematical modeling process. We argue that digital resources can be used across the modeling process, as they provide the necessary scaffolding to foster students’ insights into the essential features of a problem. To discuss the interaction between mathematical modeling and digital resources, we have reviewed the relevant research base via a structured literature survey with a focus on how digital resources, both mathematics and nonmathematics specific (i.e., focused on communication and information retrieval aspects), can enhance the teaching and learning of mathematical modeling. Through the process of selection and screening, four categories for the role of digital resources emerged: (1) extending mathematical capability through the use of digital resources that are specific to mathematics, (2) that are not specific to mathematics, as well as (3) accessing extra-mathematical knowledge via communication and information gathering and via (4) simulated, virtual, and augmented worlds. We conclude by discussing implications for teacher education and mathematics teaching and learning.
