Abstract
Children’s literature contains a strong focus on the visual. This is found specifically in children’s picture books. However, in recent years there has been a strong focus on the visuals in children’s literature with innovation approaches incorporating comics, graphic novels, and blended narratives. This chapter explores different uses of visuals found within children’s literature and how these techniques engage and encourage children and their reading. A number of titles from around the globe are highlighted to exemplify the important role visual literacy plays within the world of children’s literature and why it is critical that children are taught how to read, view, and interpret images.
