Abstract
To date, no published epidemiological studies have reported the prevalence of childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) in children diagnosed with autistic spectrum disorder (ASD). While it is widely clinically accepted that ASD and CAS can co-occur, little is known about children who receive the dual diagnosis, or the type of intervention needed for their severe difficulties. This chapter introduces three cases identified as having both autism and apraxia. Their case histories frame a literature review that reveals gaps in our knowledge and the consequent challenges faced by those with the dual diagnosis, their families and their speech language pathologists.
