Abstract

This chapter provides a brief description of the pathways into and through alcohol and other drug (AOD) specialist treatment, with a focus on the role of the medical practitioner in general practice. Three areas are described: treatment modalities and features that support treatment success, pathways into AOD care, and barriers faced by clients. The chapter closes with an outline of strategies health services use to support people’s access to treatment.
