Abstract | In 1996 a Lay parish Leader was appointed to the Catholic parish of St Louis de Montfort, Aspendale, Melbourne. The commissioning liturgy was performed by the Archbishop, the first such official appointment in Australia. The expansion of lay ministries, the growing numbers of lay ecclesial ministers and the reality of the shortage of priests contributed to the need to evaluate new models of leadership. The tomorrow's Church process projected that by 2010 there would be 80 parishes without a resident priest. Aspendale accepted a lay pastoral leader for a three year Pilot Project. Because of the complex nature of the relationship between priest and Parish, it was important for the developing role of the Lay pastoral leader to be evaluated. |
