Abstract

[Extract] This article explores relations among three different eighteenth-century domains. The first I will call “the audible”; the second covers government censorship and the political structure underpinning it; and the third is literary culture. More specifically, I will examine the final phase of Henry Fielding’s theatrical career as a key moment for literary culture’s response to new governmental attempts to control audibility.
