Abstract

[Extract] ...What these testimonies collectively indicate is that Cohen's "marine landscapes" had become, by 1800, just such hybrid creatures as the oxymoron suggests. The current chapter investigates this complex, adopting for its central figure a writer who pondered the correspondences between landscape and seascape for many years... At the same time, as this chapter will show, Gilpin's picturesque cannot quite establish an autonomous aesthetic for the ocean.
