Abstract

The Second Vatican Council marked a watershed moment by encouraging all people in the Church to engage with Scripture. It affirmed the value of examining the Bible in its historical, literary and narrative contexts, commonly referred to today as the study of 'the world behind' and 'of the text'. It also foreshadowed the importance of understanding the role of the contemporary reader of the Bible, as the numbers of people who comprised the 'world in front of the text' expanded. The approach commonly labelled as the 'three worlds of the text' is now a feature of many Religious Education curricula in Australia. The profiles of students who currently inhabit RE classrooms, however, raise questions about the efficacy of this approach, indicating that a rethinking of the 'world in front of the text' is necessary. This article offers such a rethink by outlining a future-oriented approach to Scripture where students bring their worlds to the Bible to glimpse God's vision for humankind.
