Abstract

In this thesis, contemporary questions about the place of the rule of law are addressed by examining the legal and political history of the Republic of Nauru that is evaluated according to principles described by the legal philosopher Lon Fuller.
Nauru’s failure to respect and show fidelity to the rule of law demonstrates the consequences when powerful intransigent officials ignore rules generally applicable to the people and their actions bear no consequence. If the rule of law is set aside by parliament and the judiciary it is not surprising that the nation finds itself moving almost inexorably toward failure.
