Abstract | [Extract] Defining "best practice" when it comes to liturgy is complicated, to say the least, and can be contentious, to be sure. It also depends on context. In terms of the entrance procession, for example, different liturgical spaces require different routes of varying lengths. Liturgical law, or what the church deems to be normative for liturgical celebration, relies upon official liturgical books and their praenotanda/introductions, universal or local instructions, and specific directives. It also relies on local custom. Custom has its own authority, especially when long established. At the same time, custom should not be at odds with the spirit of other aspects of liturgical law. In other words, local practice is an opportunity for what we might call creative fidelity to more universal norms. |
