Abstract | This chapter explores the issue of relativism in ethics and politics by looking to a specific form of ethical and political conflict – secular liberalism versus identify politics mobilized on religious identity – and asking whether only certain forms of “externalism” about reason and value (in Bernard William’s sense of that term ) can repudiate relativism. It is argued that this need not be so. There is scope for turning one’s back on relativism even within what Williams calls “internalism” about reason about reason and value. |
