Abstract

This introductory chapter to The Future of Whiteness outlines the understanding of what whiteness is as a social and historical identify among other identities, whether this single term can even make sense of a groups so impossibly varied, and how its utilities as a term can survive its constantly changing boundaries. It also highlights the need to understand how whiteness is lived, and not just how it is ideologically represented or manipulated.
