Abstract

Embracing the Vatican II Mission for Education was commissioned by the Catholic Education Commission of Victoria in honour of Tom Doyle AO. Tom Doyle was ordained a priest in the Archdiocese of Melbourne, Australia, on the eve of the Second Vatican Council. For the next sixty years he has spent his life unpacking and implementing the vision of the Council. He has worked in seminary formation, adult education, catechesis and religious education.

Tom was Director of Catholic Education in the Archdiocese of Melbourne for over two decades and Director of Religious Education prior to that. He has been both member and Chair of the National Catholic Education Commission. His contribution and infl uence span over half a century. This book is made up of essays from those who continue to work in the field of Catholic school identity, religious education, scripture, theological formation and governance, both nationally and internationally. All of them have been infl uenced by Tom Doyle. All of them are continuing the task of embracing the mission for Catholic education that was renewed at Vatican II. It is hoped that this book of essays will inspire others to do the same.
