Abstract | [Extract] In 1948, during the height of the Greek Civil War, children in the northern region of Greece were transported by communist forces fighting the Greek army. An estimated twenty-eight thousand children were taken to Poland, Albania, Bulgaria, Rumania, Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia in a mass exodus. The Greek government also orchestrated its own evacuation of children from the war zones, and the Greek Queen Frederica led the campaign to prevent children from being taken by Communists over the borders of Northern Greece. |
