Abstract | [Extract] This chapter hinges the relationship between work and the Covid-19 Recession on the problem of increasing precarisation. This concept describes how the risks of economic survival and social reproduction in capitalist societies are tranfserred from the institutions of capital and the state onto workers and households (Kalleberg 2018; Standing 2014). It is closed related to the concept of precarity, which can be undersood as a general state of vulnerability, anxiety and anomie about the future (Millar 2017), and the sub-concepts of prevarious/insecure work, which refer to poor-quality jobs with common features like low pay, employment insecurity and poor social protection (Kalleberg 2018), It is also linked to the idea of the "precarious worker" as an individual whose social and economic background makes them more likely to depend upon these jobs (Campbell and Price 2016). |
