Abstract

Play in hospital is not a new concept. Play in hospital does not happen by chance. Play in hospital can be found in a variety of wards, departments and specialist areas. Play in hospital occurs in many countries throughout the world. The prioritisation of play in hospital varies, often as a response to differing social and political structures, at various levels. This chapter provides a background to the development of play in hospital in Australia, with a focus on a specific hospital, the Royal Children's Hospital (Melbourne)
