Abstract

The development of a national curriculum can be fraught with controversy and challenge. In several countries governments have sought to gain control of the curriculum by establishing a national curriculum within which schools are obliged to follow strict national accountability guidelines in planning, implementing and evaluating their curriculum programs. This important book presents a comprehensive account of Australian national curriculum developments from 1988 to 1995. It provides a unique study of a microcosm of Catholic primary school teachers who sought to adapt school based curriculum programs in keeping with those national curriculum developments. An analysis of the findings should shed valuable light on curriculum developments at national, state and local levels. It should be particularly useful for all stakeholders in curriculum development such as teachers, curriculum consultants, in-service providers, government ministers, university pre-service educators, in short, all personnel who have a vested interest in developing superior curriculum programs for students with diverse ranges of abilities.
