The Gathering represents the passing of a yearlong artist residency. The studio program established by St Vincent’s Hospital is located at Caritas Christi Hospice, Kew. Reflecting on this unique experience, I wanted the title of the exhibition to encompass the rituals, processes, research and community engagement that occurred in this unique setting. ‘Gathering’ is both an action that describes how I collected art materials, video footage and research data, and also defines the coming together as a community of patients, staff members, volunteers, families and myself as artist, to engage in a collaborative art project. The artwork I created during the residency gathered evidence that renders daily melancholic rituals visible and documents ceremonies of death and mourning...
