Abstract

There has been wide academic and research interest in the application of social media as instructional and communication tools in contemporary educational settings. Hence, it has been unsurprising to see the increased use of the social media application Twitter integrated into education. Despite this, it is evident that there are still too few educators in initial teacher education (ITE) who scaffold its introduction to their pre-service teachers in their courses and few early career teachers who use it. Whilst the use of a specific, local hashtag for this purpose has been explored in other studies, this research goes further in considering the online community for pre-service and early career teachers that is created as a social learning space using hashtags and evaluating it with a value creation framework. Results show these teachers moved through the stages of the framework and achieved realized value in their professional lives.
