Abstract | This chapter focuses on two critical issues of concept inventories (CIs) in STEM subjects (STEM-CIs) for initial teacher education (ITE)—one is enhancing testing efficiency and accuracy for CI tests through modern technologies and the other is evaluating learning gain in a more general approach. First, we review the research conducted on STEM-CIs using modern item response theory (IRT) and discuss the advantages of their use in STEM education. Second, we discuss applications of IRT models, which not only serve as analytical tools but also form the foundation for the development of computerised adaptive testing (CAT) that can improve efficiency substantially and reduce student anxiety by selecting items that are tailored to each student’s CI level. Third, we present several rigorous mathematical computations of gain based on a general family of IRT models. Finally, we discuss how these methodologies when applied to STEM-CIs have important applications for conceptual understanding in ITE research. |
